Salon Declares Darkness Always Sexy

Salon Declares Darkness “Always Sexy”

Once more the media admires the dark triad.

Note
It has come to my attention that Salon presents as attempting to normalize pedophilia. This is a serious observation made by Mike Cernovich and others. This article remains available as part of the Media Mentions category archive at Dark Triad Man.

Salon has a brief but enjoyable article by Erin Coulehan published on Tuesday, January 5th, 2016. To summarize, Ms. Coulehan discusses a recent study at the University of Bern in Switzerland that was conducted on the dark triad personality traits.

The psychopath in your office: How ruthlessness, risk and narcissism pay off at work is indeed short but also notable in honest admissions by the writer, who has been featured in Rolling Stone, Slate, Elle and other publications.

Describing the lure of the Dark Triad Man and his driven competence, she notes:

“Darkness is always sexy, and who wouldn’t want to flirt with their self-destruct button for potential gain?”

The study in question was headed by Daniel Spurk, who interviewed nearly a thousand participants and correlated career success with the dark triad traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy.

Spurk’s published results demonstrated that Machiavellian calculation drove career success upwards and narcissistic vision resulted in increased financial career rewards.

This is what has been found by other media outlets.

The Huffington Post and Harvard Business Review have also published findings regarding the outstanding, desirable results of the Dark Triad Man in the world of professional effort.

Salon goes further to explain:

“Calculation and manipulation, hallmarks of Machiavellianism, were associated with high degrees of career success in participants. Manipulative tendencies were seen to aid professional ascension based on the ability to read people and mold social situations in one’s favor. To bend the ear or pull the strings of the decision maker provides an advantage of influence for those with such inclinations.”

It is important to understand the absolutely necessary presence of these results. It is not through mediocrity, common performance or the deployment of average talent and determination that awesome leadership is delivered.

The qualities of vision, brilliance and competence are crucial.

In their absence, leadership is mere management.

Without them, success is mere keeping pace.

It is in the welding of strong imaginative vision, subtle and engaging brilliance, and the cold, icy spear of competence thrown by the intelligent psychopath that the vast capabilities of our illimitable archetype are brought to bear on the dark world.

Such is the way of the Dark Triad Man.

Intelligent psychopathy in action.

The Salon author had not expected, however, for psychopathy to rank at the bottom of the three dark triad traits for professional acumen and compensation:

“Surprisingly, the survey’s results suggested psychopaths are the worst of the worst in terms of performance and financial earning, which Spurk attributes to the inherent impulsivity and risk-taking tendencies associated with psychopathy. A psychopath’s intelligence, according to Spurk, can determine their success based on their ability to temper their impulses and gauge which risks are worth taking.”

Intelligence is indeed critical, and so is the quality of patience in the tempering of impulses.

This was called out in the immortal words of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543 – 1616), first of the Tokugawa Shoguns and indisputably one of the terrifying dark triad men in history:

“The strong manly ones in life are those who understand the meaning of the word patience. Patience means restraining one’s inclinations.”

Tokugawa Ieyasu’s descendants ruled Japan with ruthless iron fists for centuries as undisputed shoguns.

He knew how to seize the throne with permanence.

He was a Dark Triad Man.
